International symposium on ‘Urban open spaces - Quality provision and assessment’

This one-day event, hosted by the Nordic Green Space Award partnership, will discuss will discuss the concept of ‘quality’ from many different sides, zooming in on quality in a context of public space, public service delivery, and urban green spaces in particular. This congress will take critical look at the interface between urban human habitation and urban green spaces to build upon our understanding of the elements of urban green spaces and their interconnectedness with quality of life in our fast expanding cities. Journal ‘Urban Forestry & Urban Greening’ Celebrates It’s 10th Anniversary

European Forum on Urban Forestry Conference - June 2011

The program for this year’s European Forum on Urban Forestry Conference, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland on June 1-4, 2011, has been finalized. The program provides the opportunity to hear from a range of researchers, forest managers and policy colleagues developing and delivering urban forestry across Europe and from as far a field as the USA and South America.

The speakers will cover topics ranging from recreation management and user preferences, developing evidence of health benefits of woodland activity, how to work with and sustain community engagement in urban areas, how to use urban forestry and green infrastructure to market cities to business and how new models of delivery and working can help address some of the current financial challenges.

The field visit program complements the plenary sessions and will provide a chance for participants to see and hear about how some of the issues covered during the indoor sessions are being implemented in some of the most economically and health deprived communities in Europe.

A few months after the successful IUFRO World Congress in Seoul, where several urban forestry sessions were arranged, it is time to update you about the Urban Forestry Research Group.

The new coordinator of our Research Group, which after a restructuring in IUFRO now has number 6.07.00, is Dr David Nowak (dnowak@fs.fed.us). Dave has been deputy coordinator for the past five years. Sreetheran Maruthaveeran (sreetheran@frim.gov.my) will stay on as deputy, while the group welcomes Francisco Escobedo (fescobedo@ufl.edu) of the University of Florida as new deputy.

I will continue to work for the group as well, as third deputy. Moreover, as one of the new deputy coordinators of Division 6, I’ll have the opportunity to strengthen collaboration with related research groups within IUFRO.

The International Society of Arboriculture is holding its Call for Papers for its 2011 Annual Meeting in Sydney, Australia.  The APPLICATION DEADLINE  is August 31, 2010.

ISA’s International Annual Conference is the premier gathering of arboricultural professionals from around the world. Practicing arborists come together with top researchers and educators to learn the latest in research, technology, and innovation in arboriculture and urban forestry.  Proposals will be accepted for 30- and 60-minute oral presentations, as well as Tree Academy workshops, climbing demonstrations, and poster presentations.  Proposals will be evaluated based on overall quality, appropriateness and timeliness of topic, clear definition of topic focus, potential for practical application of material, and attractiveness of topic to a diverse audience.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR URBAN FORESTRY IN CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS
Beijing, China, 29 August - 1 September 2010

To maintain sustainable urban forests in cities is the ultimate goal of urban forest management. However, this task can be very challenging for cities facing unfavorable natural or anthropogenic influences. In contrast to extensive studies and discussions on managing urban forests in cities under normal conditions, less information is available for urban foresters in those challenging environments. In Fall 2010, a conference organized by the IUFRO’s Research Group on Urban Forestry (6.14.00) and Beijing Forestry University will bring together scientists, policy makers, practitioners, and concerned citizens to share important findings, innovative science and technologies, and daily experience in dealing with various challenges now and in the future. Also, the benefits of urban forests to people living in challenging environments will be discussed.

The event is the final event of the PLUREL project: PERI-URBAN LAND USE RELATIONSHIPS - STRATEGIES AND SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR URBAN-RURAL LINKAGES funded by the European Commission*s sixth Framework Programme for research (EC FP6 036921).

2010 EUROPEAN FORUM ON URBAN FORESTRY

NEW PUBLICATIONS

NEW ISSUE OF URBAN FORESTRY & URBAN GREENING
Issue 4, Volume 8 of the scientific journal ‘Urban Forestry & Urban Greening’ (UFUG) has been published. Articles in this issue look at, for example, the restorative properties of small urban parks, contracting out in green space management, and the impact of solar radiation on green roof plants. Most universities encourage publication in Web of Science journals.

Please note that there will be two important urban forestry sessions at the upcoming World Forestry Congress in Argentina.
