Conference ‘Landscape Ecology and Forest Management – Challenges and solutions’ Chengdu, China, 16-18 September 2008 A draft programme of this IUFRO conference is now available at http://research.eeescience.utoledo.edu/lees/IUFRO/2008MTG/. The programme includes a symposium on ‘Urban Forest Landscapes in the Context ofDeveloping Countries and Rapid Urbanization’ organized by IUFRO 6.14.00 ‘Urban Forestry’.

PUBLICATIONS
Latest issue of Urban Forestry & Urban Greening The scientific journal ‘Urban Forestry & Urban Greening’ has just released its 2nd issue of 2008 (Volume 7). The issue includes papers on, for example, selection of tree planting sites in Los Angeles, improving contract design for green-space management, the perceived restorativeness of gardens, and the use of coppice in urban woodland management. New book on City Forests With my apologies for promoting my own work, I am glad to announce that the book ‘The Forest and the City: The cultural landscape of urban woodland’ will soon be published by Springer. The book looks at the relationship between cities and their forests over time, focusing on socio-cultural links. EDUCATION
Course ‘Introduction to Green Roofs’ Sheffield, UK, 29 May 2008 The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in green roofs and does not require any previous knowledge of the technology. Topics will include the history of green roofs, benefits, construction aspects, maintenance, contract aspects, as well as site visits. Rome Millennium Cities Prize 30 April is the deadline for applications to the Rome Millennium Cities Prize, established by the city of Rome in partnership with the United Cites and Local Authorities (UCLG) and the UN Millennium Campaign to reward cities engaged in strategic and participatory planning focused on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The winning city from the South will be hosted by the city of Rome and collect a prize of 50,000 euro. The organizers have received several applications, but they would also like to broaden the field of participants as much as possible. Applications are simple, and can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish. All interested cities can apply directly and e-mail their applications to this same address: romemillenniumcitiesprize@uniroma1.it. The winning city from the South will be hosted by the city of Rome and collect a prize of 50,000 euro.

Applications are simple, and can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish. The ASEM Urban Forestry Network, a cooperation of countries and experts from Asia and Europe, has organized several interesting conferences in the past, for example about urban forestry and human health. The network is now planning to organize a conference in China later this year. The Chinese organizers are presently trying to determine the most suitable dates for this event. URBAN FORESTRY & URBAN GREENING
Issue 1 of 2008 is available online at http://www.sciencedirect.com (search for the journal name). Papers deal with issues as different as feng-shui landscapes in Okinawa, Japan, the green structure of Hanoi, Vietnam, and alien plant species in South-African towns. Moreover, keep an eye out for issue 2, which will be released during early spring. Good research papers, review articles, short communications and book reviews are always welcome. REPORT ‘TREES IN TOWNS II’
The report Trees in Towns II assesses the effectiveness of tree management in urban areas in England. It identifies changes since earlier surveys, including Trees in Towns published in 1993.
